Day after day as I headed to work they would be there basking in their sameness. Upon returning home in the evening as you might expect nothing had changed in their group dynamics. Well until that one day when something was different. Their goose world was intruded upon. There in front of God and everyone a big white duck floated in their midst.
All of the geese kept their distance or at least tried to but the duck just would not leave them to their uniformity. If they swam up stream he would follow occasionally quacking in a very ungoose like fashion. At times they took flight only to discover that the duck too could fly. Day after day the uncomfortable dance would continue.
Many Christians seem to see their role in life as being like the geese. Everyone the same. They form churches where everyone has the same ideas, talents, interests, education, dress the same, sound the same and shun those who are different as if there is something wrong with them. As one song writer put it “If you want to be one of his you have to act like one of us.”
Isn't it amazing that the church that Jesus established was exactly not like that. He gathered people from all walks of life to form one body. Though they had very different levels of education and income they could belong. In spite of the racial differences, differing talents or skills, or spiritual maturity they were all welcome. Our Heavenly Father embraces our differences and in fact created them.
What then creates the unity that God speaks of so often? Jesus. Jesus Christ is the focus of all that is Christian. In Christ men, women, and children throughout the ages have formed one body with Christ as the head. What a blessing it is to look out at MCC and go beyond putting up with our white ducks but to embrace them and celebrate the wonderful variety that is The Body of Christ on Earth. Let the individual notes of our lives combine to create a sweet symphony of praise which we may daily offer to our Lord Jesus Christ.
May our honks and quacks unite. :)
