In his book “The Release of the Spirit” Chinese pastor Watchman Nee talks about this type of revelation as God shining his light on us. “What the Lord does is to pierce us with His penetrating light.” he adds that this revelation “enables us to see what God sees.” God shines his light and all that we think, feel, believe, want, crave, imagine, and fear are revealed. Our sin becomes apparent even the attitudes of our hearts and evil desires become known in that light.
During our Tuesday night Men's Bible Study we were discussing this uncomfortable truth from God's Word. Several guys shared their journey with God into the light and even dared to open up windows into their souls to each other. It was a wonderful time of sharing and dangerous vulnerability among men who have decided to be real about their life and faith. It was great.
I almost hate to admit what I was thinking after that time of sharing but it was for me a powerful picture of many Christians that I fear may be all too true. What came to mind was God's powerful light bursting forth upon us in its blazing glory and awesome aspect yet what we do with that light is simply make shadow puppets on the walls of our hearts.
Instead of confession and repentance that ignites the flames of revival we opt for shadows of the truth to entertain us. We settle for images of holiness rather than becoming holy and pure. We are distracted by the man made pictures more than by the divine inferno.
My prayer is that we . . . that I let the light of God shine on my inner man and that I would have eyes to see what God sees in me. Please Father prevent me from playing with your heavenly incandescence and embrace your life transforming light. Amen.
